A Perfect Family Day in the Islands of Marathon

Morning: Breakfast and Beach Fun

  • 8:00 AM – Breakfast at Marathon Bagel Co: Start the day with a delicious breakfast at the local bagel shop, known for its friendly atmosphere and authentic bagels. Families can enjoy a wide assortment of freshly made bagels, delicious breakfast sandwiches, bowls, pastries, and more! Don’t forget to grab some coffee or a refreshing iced drink for the adults!
  • 9:00 AM – Sombrero Beach: After breakfast, head to Sombrero Beach, one of the best family-friendly beaches in Marathon. Settle down on the soft sands and let the kids play in the warm waters. The beach features a playground, picnic areas, and beach volleyball courts, making it easy to spend the whole morning enjoying the sun and sand. Bring beach toys for building sandcastles and swimming gear to enjoy the gentle waves.

 

Midday: Adventure and Education

  • 11:30 AM – Visit the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters: Drive over to Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters for an engaging and educational experience. Here, kids can learn about marine life through interactive exhibits. Opt for an animal encounter where the kids can feed and interact with the animals in the aquarium (reservation recommended). They’ll love seeing stingrays, eels, sea urchins and sharks up close!
                • 1:00 PM – Lunch at Keys Fisheries: After a fun-filled morning, enjoy a casual lunch with amazing waterfront views at Keys Fisheries, famous for its fresh seafood and laid-back atmosphere. Families can order fish tacos, conch fritters, or a yummy fish sandwich, all while enjoying lf. They also have a wonderful selection at their onsite seafood market.

 

Afternoon: Exploring and Fun

  • 2:00 PM – Dolphin Research Center: Next, head to the Dolphin Research Center, where children can learn about these intelligent marine mammals. While visiting, you might even get to see dolphins performing in training sessions and exhibit shows. You can also reserve (in advance) dolphin encounters and interactive programs so kids can get into the water and participate in dorsal pulls, various dolphin tricks, and educational games that focus on marine conservation.
  • 4:00 PM – Sunset Park: After the dolphin encounter, take a short drive to Sunset Park, which is tucked away in Key Colony Beach and the perfect little spot for some downtime. It features recreational areas, trails, and scenic spots to relax and enjoy the view. Kids can run around in the open space, and you can take in the beauty of the surrounding scenery.

 

Evening: Dinner and Relaxation

  • 5:30 PM – Dinner at The Sunset Grille & Raw Bar: Head to The Sunset Grille, where you can enjoy a relaxed dining experience. This waterfront restaurant has a swimming pool, outdoor tiki bar & often live music playing outside. They offer a variety of dishes like burgers, tacos, sushi, and local fish specialties.
  • 7:00 PM – Family Movie Night under the Stars: Back at your vacation rental, set up a cozy outdoor movie experience in the patio area using the large flat screen TV. There’s ample seating and tables to accommodate large groups. Simply provide popcorn, drinks, blankets, any maybe some local Key Lime Pie for a fun family night outside underneath the stars.

 

Wrap-Up: Stroll through the Neighborhood
